Beyond the Label

When our California expert introduced us to Pioneer Peak, she said simply, “This is one of my favorite Merlots ever.” And if that somehow doesn’t intrigue you, the wine’s pedigree certainly will...

This gorgeous Merlot hails from Sonoma Mountain, a premium district of the larger Sonoma region. The mountain’s higher elevation (up to 1,200 feet above sea level) plus winds and fog from the Petaluma Gap help keep temperatures low. This cool climate extends the time on the vine, giving grapes ample opportunity to develop intense flavors, and locks in vibrancy.

The vineyards benefitted from exceptional growing season conditions, too. As critic Jeb Dunnuck writes, “brilliant” 2018 is a “sensational vintage for Sonoma.” In short, everything was just right to produce wonderfully ripe, fresh and concentrated Merlot grapes.

As the final touch, Pioneer Peak was aged for 12 months in fine French oak barrels. This imparted toasty spice notes to the wine’s vibrant plum, fruitcake and savory herb flavors. With structured tannins and a plush, velvety mouthfeel, this Merlot will pair well with a variety of foods. We suggest braised duck or creamy mushroom risotto.

Representing the pinnacle of Sonoma Merlot, this new exclusive is an ideal red to pour when you want to impress. It even won a gold medal at the San Francisco International Wine Competition. Hurry to be among the first to taste it.
